Founded by EC NCCP Certified Competition Coach Katie Shkut, Graestone Equestrian is built on a lifelong passion for horses, a commitment to excellence, and a belief that strong horsemanship is the foundation of every successful partnership.

As a first-generation equestrian, Katie has developed her career through determination, continuous education, and hands-on experience producing both horses and riders. Her coaching philosophy combines technical skill development with a strong emphasis on horse welfare, sportsmanship, and creating confident, capable athletes in and out of the saddle.

Katie holds a degree in Bio-Medical Sciences with a Business Administration Minor from the University of Guelph. This unique combination of education provides a strong foundation for both horse and rider development, allowing her to approach training with an understanding of bio-mechanics, physiology, performance, and evidence-based practices. 

Katie specializes in eventing while also coaching riders in dressage and hunter/jumper disciplines. She has extensive experience retraining and developing Off-the-Track Thoroughbreds, helping them transition into successful sport horse careers. Her dedication to the breed has led her to compete at multiple Retired Racehorse Project Thoroughbred Makeovers in Kentucky, showcasing the versatility and athleticism of former racehorses.

Committed to lifelong learning and professional growth, Katie has trained with respected professionals throughout North America, including time spent developing horses and riders in Aiken, South Carolina. In 2025, she was selected as a member of the inaugural Ontario Equestrian Young Professionals Program, recognizing her commitment to leadership, business development, and the future of the equestrian industry.

Today, Katie leads Graestone Equestrian with a focus on individualized coaching, exceptional horse care, and fostering a positive, supportive environment where riders can pursue their goals at every stage of their journey. Whether helping a student build confidence, preparing a horse for competition, or developing the next generation of equestrians through the Working Student Program, Katie is dedicated to creating lasting partnerships and meaningful success both inside and outside the show ring.
